Three months later the regiment returned to American Lake, WA where it was mustered out on 8 October 1916. The 161st Infantry Regiment is a unit of the Washington National Guard that has served in U.S. military operations since World War I. Washington's National Guard began with the formation of the 1st and 2nd Infantry Regiments in 1886 and 1887. Throughout the summer the 25th trained hard from squad level up to division, with the 35th Infantry serving as an opposing force. Nearly 500 citizen soldiers and airmen served on state active duty in the aftermath of the December 2 storm and subsequent flooding in Southwest Washington. It had been associated with the 2nd Infantry Division in South Korea.
