I still have that velvet bow tie locked away in a box of keepsakes and memories. In the early 90s the Palais was briefly used as a rave club. A strange but belting instrumental. Two records I remember from there were, Love of the common people Nikki Thomas, The latter people would sit in the floor in front of each other sitting between the person behinds, legs, and rock backward and forward and side to side. , I still remember MK shouting from the steps and then whilst walking the queue checking us all out .. BIG and fond memories of the venue I cut my teeth in. Lovely, tuneful music played by Billy Merrin, skips along happily; don't you just want to dance along .. Does anyone remember dancing round their handbags at the Locarno. Here's a few that I'm talking about (I could list loads). though thinking about it maybe too heavy for likes of Palais? Cliff Bennett is very much alive and well and performed in Nottingham's Old Market Square at the Nottingham Pulse festival last summer.
At the bottom of the sheet it mentions INSIST ON A UNION BAND FOR YOUR DANCES! Its very interesting that people remember so much about the Palais, Ive a quantity of records of band stuff, payments for wages etc, and heard of the antics of many. cheers John.It was a good pub the Horse and Jockey. For this reason there are many records that for me, are Palais records. Scarce as hens teeth to find anything relating to the Jaybirds and Jay Cats. In the pre-smartphone era, it wasn't really the done thing to say, 'Tell you what, let's turn this camera the wrong way round, take a few pictures of ourselves, then I'll pop along to Boots during the week, get the film developed, and post copies to everyone.'. This was another club which didn't have the best records for trouble. 
Happy days. Well it was a Christmas party being held for all the children of the staff who worked at the Palais. Camping, fishing, travel, photography, boating, sailing, motorbikes. The seats were always taken as when someone got up one of the walkers would sit down. Location:rise park. "T, I don't know why but "Love On A Mountain Top" seemed to get something of a revival at both the Palais and the Locarno at the same time. Nostalgia, and heaps of great memories for me. We would always aim to get in the queue early and watch it build as worshipers from all over arrived. By Hilda a lady i knew said in the early days her job was to dance in a sort of a cage .and people would pay to dance with her ,her husband was in the Band ,this went on for many yearsMyself i liked dancing on the moving floor ,Saturday's were great . I used to love the deserted streets. had some great nights in the pub, very small, tables to the left, bar to the right just enough room to walk through. I later appeared there as a performer myself. Often went there for a couple of beers before going over the road to the Palais. Our own shrine to all things soul. Then the Palais again, then Oceana, and currently Pryzm.
